Switching to a aluminum block is pretty involved, but it would definitely save weight.

If you get aftermarket rear LCA's, then you can ditch the quad shocks.

Explorer block is..75 lbs lighter.

Some guys have ditched the quad shocks with no problems.

I dont think the explorer block is 40 lbs lighter.....the only real difference I think is the GT40p heads and intake.

The Explorer block is aluminum. The GT block is iron. I'm pretty sure there's at least a 40lb difference. But, I could be wrong

Oh, I know where' we're getting mixed up. I'm thinking 5.0 explorer blocks vs 5.0 mustang blocks. They're both iron. Yeah, the 4.6 explorer block is aluminum.

Great thread....

dont forget that the 96-01 Cobra's, 03-04 mach 1's, 03-04 Mercury Marauder's & the older Lincoln mark 8's all have the 4.6 aluminum block also....

Keep the quad shocks btw... i have mine removed on my 95 (with MM lca's installed) and there is still some wheel hop...the weight savings on removing the quads is too minimal to deal with wheel hop IMO...

Nice first post but my strut tower brace weighed 6lb, steel driveshaft 20lb, and the FRPP aluminium driveshaft 11lb. Smog pump weighs 7lb but if you include the piping it becomes 10lb.
I've shaved off 25lb by removing the smog pump assembly/strut tower brace and replacing the driveshaft.
You can also add:
Stock E7 heads (bare): 45lb each

Alot of those weights are estimates.

They also vary from mod motor cars to the pushrod cars. Very good post btw and it at least lets people see where they can remove weight from. I lost well over 100lbs going from irs to sra and the aluminum block was around 70lbs lighter than the iron one. I believe the doorbars are about 15lbs for both, I still want to remove those. The front bumper is another 20lbs. Going to lightweight drag wheels will save 75 to 100lbs depending on what wheels you had on before.

Alot of the weights are based from Modular Mustangs.
And you're right about the Aluminum block; I edited my original post (my mistake). Don't know why I was thinking they were only 40lbs lighter but they are actually 75lbs lighter.

Yeah, I noticed most were pretty close to what I had measured with my mod motor stuff. Like I said, it's a great post and hopefully people will check it out to see what they can live with and without to improve their performance.
